The Science Block

Tal-Handaq
This is the first building on the right as you come through the school gates.  The Chemistry labs are on the ground floor and Physics classrooms are on the first floor, accessed by the external staircase.

*The next seven photos in this gallery were taken during the RNS Tal Handaq period (June 1977) by the then Head of Chemistry, Hugh Ritchie.  They show the inside of the Main Chemistry Lab (ground floor left) and the "A" level chemistry Lab (ground floor right).

Main Chemistry Lab - June 1977

These four photos show the interior of the main chemistry lab (ground floor left  block-13 aka "The Science Block").

They were taken by ex member of staff Hugh Ritchie in 1977.  At that time Hugh was the Head of Chemistry and also taught an integrated science course to years 1 and 2 (and possibly 3).

The first photo was taken looking towards the front, taken from the back of the classroom standing by the "Emergency Exit" door (see third photo in this group).

The second photo was taken looking towards the front of the class.  It was taken standing by the wall cabinet (see last photo in this group).

The third photo was taken looking towards the back of the room.

The forth photo was taken looking towards the back of the main chemistry lab.  Taken standing near the "other" door.

The photo looks through the joining door into the "A" Level Chemistry Lab.  There is a close-up of the joining door in the next set of photos.

The next three photos were taken in June 1977 by Hugh Ritchie who was Head of Chemistry at that time.

The first  photo (left) is looking through the door from the main chemistry laboratory into the A Level classroom.....

The next two photos were taken inside the "A" Level Chemistry Lab with Hugh's back to the same blackboard that can be seen through the joining door in the photo immediately above.

The RNS Tal-Handaq Tuck Shop - Looking towards the school gates

Tal-Handaq
The shade was obviously some (name long forgotten) teacher's sensible idea to protect the kids queuing for their pop and sweets.  Not exactly sure why the guard rail though.....unless its a queuing rail maybe?

That's Block-1 to the right of the school gates.

The Tuck Shop

Tal Handaq
Photo of the Tuck Shop taken by Tal Handaq ex pupil Russ Holme on a visit back to the school in November 2010.

Don't think I've ever seen the Tuck Shop looking so dapper!  The Language Lab is also visible in the distance at far left.

Smallest Classroom aka Mr. Plant's Store

Taken from the road - For many of us this building either went unnoticed or we had no idea what it was used for....

Interior View Of Science Lab - Block-14

Tal Handaq
A frame grab from Lynn Mentiply's video of a school visit in 2005.  It was taken through the right hand window at the back of of  Block-14 (see previous photo).

The location had me stumped for a while as it's not the main science block.  However, by carefully watching this scene in the video I was able to (fairly confidently) identify one of the large "Agave americana" plants.  This placed the classroom at the back of the single story Block-14 (with the photographer's back to Block-2).

Block-2

Tal Handaq
Block-2.   I remember taking a 2nd year class at the top of those stairs but I can't remember what the subject was?

In fact for some unknown reason one of my clearest memories of the school is walking swiftly from my formroom (top left Block-16) and seeing a friend looking out for me (because I was late) from the top of those stairs.

View from Block-1 Stairs

Nice view showing the stairs at the end of Block 2,  Block 14 with Block 16 behind it and Block 12 on the far side of the road.

I took 2nd (2BG) year art in this building and 3rd year Civics in one of the rooms entered from the front.

View from top of Science Block Stairs

A wide angle shot showing the ubiquitous Opuntia hanging over the wall next to the school gates.  We have a nice view of Block 1 with Block 2 behind.  The single story Block 14 is visible with the top of Block 15 in the background behind it.

Nice view from Block-1 showing several of the older school buildings.  None of these buildings survived the building of the new girls' junior liceum.

Apart from a nice distant view over the tree, the main buildings of note are: The Tuck Shop, Mr Plant's Store-Room and Block 12.

View from corner of Science Block

Tal-Handaq
Rather unusual view from corner stairs of Science Block.   More or less moving left to right we see the single story Block 14  with Block 15 behind.

The little building in the center is a store room. We see the boys toilet block behind it and the school hall and Block 16 behind the toilets.   The school hall is visible in the background between Blocks 15 and 16.

Finally (front to back) the buildings on the right are:  the Tuck Shop, the "little classroom" (or Mr Plants Store-room) and the southern end of Block 12.  PHEW!   Click to see larger image.

The Tuck Shop and Adjacent Buildings

Tal Handaq
Southern end (or top) of the school.  Buildings from left to right are: Block 12 hidden behind a palm tree,   Mr Plant's Store Room (also used as a classroom for commercial studies in the late 50s),   the old Music Room,   the Tuck Shop (with the pedestrian fence) and finally another store room.

Anyone know the purpose of the Tuck Shop fence?

Anyone know what the little building at right of picture was used for?

Tal Handaq - Gates Closed

Tal Handaq
Photo taken by Valerie Shutler (TH 58/59) on a visit back to the school in 1994.  The little building with the huge bourgainvillia behind it is the Tuck Shop.

The sign on the gate reads   "ENTRY PROHIBITED WITHOUT PERMISSION".  So if you went in Valerie..............

Small building used variously at different times as a classroom and store room.  Known at one time as Mr. Plant's Store Room.

A little storage room of some sort?

Smallest classroom in the school!

Tal-Handaq
Although I was at the school at the time, I hadn't realised that this building was being used as a classroom until I was told by Valerie Shutler that it was used for Mr Stanley's Commercial Course in 1958/59.

This is a nice view taken with the Music Room at my back and showing Block 1 across the tarmac in the distance.

The Pop Shop

Tal-Handaq
....or the Tuck Shop.

Pupils from the late 50's early 60's may remember the competition that Coca Cola (or Pepsi Cola) ran where you had to check under the bottle top cork for a red, yell, green or blue image of a bottle. If you found one you stood to win 2/6, 5/-, 10/- or £1.  Any winners....?

One of my favourite views of the school!

Block 1 From Block 14

Tal-Handaq
Block-2 is also visible in this shot. My 3rd year civics classroom was held in the top left room of that block (accessed by outside stairway).  Although the teacher (can't remember his name) was probably very good, I have few memories of any of his classes.

Block 12 Covered Walkway

Tal-Handaq
This is where I used to get off the school bus in the morning. Quite convenient in the 3rd year as my form room was top left up the stairs visible at left  Of course the covered walkway wasn't there during my time at the school Sept 57 to July 60.

School Gates - Looking Out

Tal-Handaq
Looking out of the school gates at the top of the tarmac area. I'm guessing that the prickly pear (or one of it's ancestor) was probably there during the time of The Royal Naval School Tal Handaq but the building at the top of the road is obviously new.

Block 2

Tal-Handaq
Taken from the tarmac area.  You can just make out the end of Block-1 at left and part of Block-14 at right. The little building just past Block-2 was the girls' toilet block in the late 50's (a new block has been built since).

The little building to the right of Block 2 was used as a chapel by Liceo Mikiel Anton Vassalli.

As always, click image to see a larger version.

Block 14

Tal-Handaq
This was the largest of the single story blocks. It was where 2BG took art in 1957/58 - through the double green doors I think.

I remember the class not so much because of the art lessons but because of an innocent, romantic encounter that sadly never came to anything - but then we were both just 12 years old.

Block 1

Tal-Handaq
This block was situated immediately on the left as you come through the school gates at the top of the school.

Of course the impressive bougainvilleas were not around in the late 50's, early 60's when I was at the school.
